Class Experience
In this 4 week course, learners will develop their art and writing skills, to create a short visual novel or art piece with writing. The course will begin with a multi-media presentation on each of the SEL competencies: Empathy, Diversity, Communication, Problem-Solving and Peer Relationships. After each presentation, learners will be asked to spend 10 min writing a a few paragraphs regarding each area. They will then be given a project using one of the following mediums: drawing, painting, an online painting/drawing program or collage to explore ways to visualize their writing. Students will finish their works between classes, and post it in the classroom. The last two days will be focused on learners finalizing the writing and visuals for their visual novel. The last day will be a day for the students to share their work with each other.
Day 1 Empathy: multi-media presentation, 10 min writing exercise, Intro to drawing in graphic novels, explain project to post in the classroom.

Day 8 Learners share their visual novels. This class is a platform for learners to express and understand their relationship to themselves and others.
Learners will be supported in developing their creativity, an understanding of art forms, writing styles and a better understanding of themselves. Learners are supported to improve self-esteem and social interactions. This is not group therapy. Learners will gain a foundational understanding of art and SEL competencies, and how these areas connect with themselves. Students will develop writing skills and their own individual creativity. Class meets twice a week, for 4 weeks. Students will be expected to create and post art works between classes. Focus is on process, not product. This class is ideal for neurodivergent students, but it’s open to all learners.
